Jefferson's comments on his sister's inability to deal with her alcoholic husband, John Bolling, lead him into a general sermon on happiness in marriage through consideration and forbearance, and observations on how economy will be necessary in the depressed future of Virginia agriculture. Jefferson also advises Maria to cultivate the affections of her in-laws, urges her to write to Kitty Church, and asks her to send her watch to Philadelphia for repair.
